“Really nice to hear British Reggae alive and well. State of Satta are bringing an energy reminiscent of ‘Shanty’ with a fresh spin.” - Nile Barrows, By The Rivers

This summer, seven-piece reggae-latin band State of Satta announced the release of their debut album, 'Simmer Down' due on August 9th. A swaggering and dynamic album, Simmer Down is a melding pot of Spanish sunshine, rambunctious bass lines and heartfelt messages of self acceptance, love and unity. Offering a fresh perspective on UK reggae, State of Satta are bringing a vibrant and genial energy to this genre. Following the release of their first lead single ‘The Program’, their second single and video ‘Para Bailar’ is out on Friday.

Hailing from the cosmopolitan city of Leeds, the seven-piece collective have fused their adoration of reggae music and sound system culture with a latin flair inspired by great artists such as Havana Meets Kingston. Drawing on language-fluid vocals and hip swaying percussion inspired by European reggae greats such as Manu Chao and Mo’Kalamity, the righteous sound system force of fellow Northern band Gentleman’s Dub Club and the iconic horns of New Zealand’s Fat Freddy’s Drop, State of Satta have honed a sound that resonates across cultures and ages.

The band have toured extensively throughout the UK, headlining many sold-out shows and supporting touring bands like Dub Pistols, Dutty Moonshine Big Band & Zion Train. Their festival performances are electrifying, and they have shared main stages with reggae legends Madness and The Wailers. Their momentum shows no signs of slowing down over this festival season, as they go on to perform headline sets at Beatherder, Kelburn Garden Party and Solfest.

At the centre of their music is the enigmatic vocalist and guitarist, Yotam Sigwalt. Displaying a soulful sincerity and a commanding integrity, his lyrics lend mindful commentary on society’s woes as well as the resounding beauty of life and love. Written over the last 2 years, in which the world has seen much distress, the album’s title ‘Simmer Down’ is a marked address to addled current affairs, as well as a more direct comment to anxious individuals.

Releasing digitally on Friday is the album’s second single ‘Para Bailar’. Meaning ‘To Dance’ in Spanish, this anthemic tune is laiden with mambo inspired horn lines, romantic boleros style vocals, and a deep dub sentiment. Culminating in a cacophony of percussion, blaring horns and piano montunos, the listener can’t help but be transported to the heart of the party on the streets of Havana. The song conveys a message of freedom and love through dance, encouraging the listener to shed their ego and their worries and to instead enjoy expression and affection.

“Through State of Satta we have each found a shared purpose and family, and this album has been the product of that union.” Yotam says. “Our band mates are our brothers, and the wider network of venues and promoters are our aunts and uncles, and our audience are our loving cousins. We are eternally grateful to be doing what we love, with people who we love, for people that we love.”
